It was good seeing all of you at the shop. I hope we all got something out of it we can use to build better guitars. I did see some pretty nice set of Brazilian and Amazon going out the door. I was thinking, at our closing meeting we discussed topics for future gatherings and that’s cool but it might be good if we all try to bring something to the table at every meeting. A group like this is a cooperative and we all have important things to contribute. So don’t be shy, step up to the plate. Every topic sparks open discussion and that’s how the ball gets rolling. At this past gathering I gave a finishing demonstration, I hope you found it helpful. Rather than me giving a second consecutive lecture I’d like to give other people a chance to contribute. Any ideas? Big Daddy “G” |

Hey, Bryan must have had fun- he's already talking about the next meeting! Well, I had fun too. I think it is a good idea for each of us to bring something to talk about with the group. Don't be shy, and if your way of doing something isn't the same as someone else's way that doesn't mean that you need to back off and not mention it! Guitar building is one of those areas where there is more than one way to skin a cat- lots of different methods get us to where we want to be. Believe me, we are all learning. Here's a few suggestions for things to talk about - guitar electronics, both electric and acoustic....sharpening planes and chisels...using and making different types of neck joints...fret dressing and setting up...different ways of working with rosette styles and inlays...scalloping, carving and tuning bracing....the right way to make a nut...there's just a few ideas. |

I enjoyed the meeting a lot, and got to talk and get to know a few people better. That's another benefit of our gathering together. That being a part of a community, as well as sponging off the experience of others, is something I did not expect when I first considered lutherie. I began the obsession thinking of ways to patent new ideas and pump up my ego and bank account. Now, I still have the pride of wanting to be the first to try something, but if it works, I'll share it with the group as another way to skin that old cat! ![]() |
